Dear Imperial Beach and south bay residents, I want to reassure you of the commitment from the City of Imperial Beach to fight for better environmental and public health monitoring and protection.
I recently traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with the Center for Diseases Control (CDC) and members of the White House to ask not only for fixes to the failing sewage infrastructure causing our transboundary pollution emergency, but to ask for direct intervention from the CDC to increase monitoring of public health given the prolonged appalling conditions all residents, businesses, workers, and visitors experience in the south bay region due to unmitigated transboundary pollution, inclusive of ailments and strong nightly sewage odors that we have endured for far too long.
The CDC explained that the California Department of Public Health and the County Department of Public Health must make a public health request from the CDC, as they are the agencies tasked with protecting our community’s well-being. At this time, the County Department of Public Health only tracks specific types of gastrointestinal illness and related hospitalizations and has not yet made any requests from the California Department of Public Health, nor the CDC.

Over the past several weeks, the 15 high school students in the inaugural
YEA class have been hard at work launching their very own businesses.
After spending time developing comprehensive business plans, building
professional connections, and learning from industry experts, the students
are now actively bringing their entrepreneurial visions to life.
In the final stretch of the program, these young entrepreneurs are
laser-focused on finalizing their logos, building out their websites,
and crafting effective marketing strategies. Their energy and dedication
to turning their business ideas into reality has been truly inspiring
to witness.
We are especially proud to share that Yahira Galaviz, a student from
Montgomery High School, recently represented our South County region
in the prestigious YEA National Finals in Rochester, New York. Yahira
pitched her confectionery catering company, "Dream Ice Cream Sandwiches,"
against other top young entrepreneurs from across the country.
She had a wonderful experience and we are thrilled to support her entrepreneurial
journey.
The South County EDC is proud to support these budding business leaders
as they take this incredible step in their entrepreneurial journeys.
We look forward to celebrating their achievements and continued success.
Federal money is coming to the South Bay to transform Southwestern College
into a public transit hub.
On Friday morning, representative Juan Vargas presented a $500,000
check to Southwestern College. The federal funding will help move the
current MTS bus lane, which sits along the only main road through campus,
causing traffic and congestion for students and staff who drive to
school.
