Arkansas Repertory Theatre is thrilled to announce a new six-week series of virtual classes for artists of all ages. With a variety of subjects, class formats, and virtual mediums, The Rep is committed to creating the best-possible learning environment during times of social distancing.

Please read each class description carefully for details. A week before virtual classes begin, the Education Team will send an email outlining classroom instructions and expectations. The Rep’s Director of Education Anna Kimmell is happy to answer any questions at akimmell@therep.org.

Notes about virtual learning:

1.) All live classes will be recorded for archival purposes. 

2.) Two Rep faculty members will be present for each live Zoom class.  

3.) Please make sure The Rep has a valid email address upon registration. 

4.) A small number of need-based scholarships are available upon application for each course. Applications are due by May 15. Fill out the scholarship application form, save as a PDF, and email the form along with a personal statement to scholarships@therep.org

Rising K - 2nd Grades

Awesome Possum! Take care, Teddy Bear! What’s the deal, Banana Peel? Bring poetry to life in this wacky theatre class that combines children’s literature, creative movement, acting, music, and art! In engaging guided video lessons, students will tap into their imaginations and explore theatrical concepts like improvisation, acting through movement, and character development.

Play from Away

Rising 3rd - 5th Grades

Explore improvisation, characterization, voice and speech, costume design, and more as you create an original virtual play! With a combination of weekly in-person classes and one private 30-minute session with your instructor, students will develop, memorize, film, and share a video of their role in the play. At the end of the semester, each actor’s part will be edited together to create a virtual performance!

FORMAT: 45-minute Zoom Class, 30-minute Private Coaching

Your Voice, Your Story

Rising 6th - 8th Grades

Elevate your voice in this all-new autobiographical storytelling class! Young artists will learn the foundations of story structure and performance in a weekly virtual group class led by professional poet, comedian, actor, and improviser TJ Medel. With a combination of writing prompts, group sharing, performance coaching, and a final video submission, students will discover the power and importance of finding their voice and sharing their unique story.


FORMAT:  60-minute Zoom Class, Video Submission

Lyrics to Life

Learn how to authentically bring your lyrics to life in this acting-centric musical theatre interpretation class. With exercises and activities focused on the analysis and acting elements of song lyrics, students will learn new ways to approach musical theatre material and take ownership of their storytelling through song. With a combination of live group zoom classes, video submissions of assignments, and personal feedback, young artists will leave with tools to use in performance and auditions in the future!


FORMAT:  60-minute Zoom Class, Video Submissions

Creation in Confinement

"You are confined only by the walls you build yourself." In this class, high school artists will discover how to create theatrical work at home. Using devising philosophies that inspire installation and site-specific performances, students will explore a series of creative prompts preparing them to craft their own unique performance in their environment. Journalling and sharing will be fundamental to the process. Artists of all mediums are invited to participate.

Dance through the decades in this high-energy cardio class focusing on musical theatre dance styles and steps throughout history. Each pre-recorded class features a full-body warm up, a step-by-step breakdown of dance vocabulary from each decade, easy-to-follow cardio sequences utilizing those same steps, and long-form musical theatre choreography developed throughout the semester. Dancers of all ages can expect to learn some new musical theatre moves, break a sweat, and have fun!

All Ages!

Dance through the decades in this high-energy cardio class focusing on musical theatre dance styles and steps throughout history. Dancers can submit videos of each combination to instructor Anna Kimmell, receive tips and feedback on technique and style, and meet on zoom for one, live 20-minute private coaching session at the end of the semester.
