Project Elements: Tree Canopy Assessment, Ecosystem Benefits Analysis, Planting Prioritization, Change Analysis, Public Engagement Survey, Sample Tree Inventory, TreePlotter™ INVENTORY and CANOPY application.
Date: Winter 2019
Description: The Colorado Springs tree canopy assessment analyzed urban tree canopy (UTC), possible planting area (PPA), and tree canopy change across three time periods (1999, 2009, 2015). Additional project elements included a priority planting analysis of relationships between tree canopy and various environmental, socioeconomic and demographic factors, an on the ground sample inventory, and a public opinion survey to gauge the public's understanding and value of the urban forest. This project provided baseline data to develop strategies to protect trees, identify areas currently in need of tree canopy benefits and has helped the City take steps towards a full city tree inventory and urban forest management plan.
Total City Area: 124,949 Acres
