From Punitive to Supportive Schools: Alternatives to Discipline & Suspension

The Santa Clara County Office of Education, in partnership with the NYC Leadership Academy, is pleased to offer its "Advancing Equity Through and Beyond Crisis" webinar series. This opportunity for professional development for school staff and community partners will cover a variety of topics connected to equity and discipline in order to reduce school suspensions and provide more support for students.

Join us as we continue our Leading for Equity webinar series in conversation with school district leaders who offer restorative means to support students who need it most. Together, we will explore:

  • The increase in student vaping/tobacco use that has led to increased suspensions
  • The disproportionality of student discipline on the basis of race and ethnicity
  • Alternatives to discipline and suspension that schools have put in place to support students and families
  • Opportunities to shift from punitive responses to restorative practices and social and emotional supports
  • Intervention and cessation options for teen vaping/tobacco use vs. punitive responses

The webinar will be 60-minutes in length followed by a 30 minute Q&A. Featured guests are listed below.
