On November 16, 2021, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) released the Trademark Examination Guidelines, which became effective from January 1, 2022 and simultaneously repealed the former Trademark Examination Criteria released in December 2016.

The guidelines comprise of two volumes, namely Volume A (“Formality Examination and Clerical Work”) and Volume B (“Substantial Examination of Trademarks”). They revise and clarify many uncertain issues found in earlier versions.
